(February 16, 2021) BIG NEWS! The Federal Highway Administration announced today that the Katahdin Woods & Waters Scenic Byway has been designated as a NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY! This is excellent news for the region from both a tourism and an economic standpoint. The direct result of years of hard work by many along our wonderful 89 miles scenic byway.
The National Scenic Byways program helps America’s roads tell our national story. National Scenic Byway are thought after and popular with travelers. They support a wide array of local businesses.
Each application was reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration by subject-matter experts on historic preservation, design, cultural resources, and visual impacts, tourism and economic development, highway safety, federal lands, and Native American history and culture. The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Commerce also provided input.
The National Scenic Byway program is a collaborative effort to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States.
